Google Keep vs Google Tasks

Use Google Keep for notes and things you want to remember, and Google Tasks for things you have to get done by a date. Keep holds notes, checklists, images and drawings, sorted with labels and colours, and you can share a note to edit it together. Tasks holds to-dos with due dates, times, deadlines, repeats and subtasks, and it sits beside Gmail, Calendar and Docs. Since October 2025, reminders you set in Keep are saved as tasks in Google Tasks.

Two apps for two jobs

Google Keep is a notebook. A note can be text, a checklist, a photo, a drawing or a voice memo, and you sort notes with up to 50 labels, colours and pins. You can share a note with other people or your Google family group, and everyone edits the same note. It’s good for things you want to remember: a packing list, gift ideas, a recipe, the Wi-Fi password at the office.

Google Tasks is a to-do list. Each task can have details, a date and time, a deadline, a repeat schedule and subtasks, and Tasks reminds you when it’s due. It’s built into Google’s other apps: you can turn an email into a task in Gmail, see tasks on your calendar, and pick up tasks assigned to you in Google Chat and Docs. It’s good for things you have to do.

Reminders now live in Tasks

Google announced in April 2024 that Keep’s reminders would move to Google Tasks, and the switch began rolling out in October 2025. You still see a reminder on its note, but the notification comes from Google Tasks or Calendar, where it’s labelled “From Keep”, and you rename it there rather than in Keep.

In practice this settles the question for most people. If something has to happen at a time, it belongs in Tasks, whichever app you started it in.

Using them together

Most people who use both keep reference in Keep and actions in Tasks. A few habits help:

On a computer

Neither app has a desktop version. Keep runs at keep.google.com, and Tasks at tasks.google.com or in the side panel of Gmail and Calendar. On a Mac, these are the ways to keep Google Tasks in view, from a pinned browser tab to an app that floats your list beside your work.

Questions

Is Google Tasks replacing Google Keep?

No. Only Keep's reminders moved: since the move began in October 2025, a reminder set on a Keep note is saved as a task. Notes, lists, labels and sharing stay in Keep.

Can I turn a Google Keep checklist into Google Tasks?

Google doesn't offer a way to convert a checklist. You can copy the items into Google Tasks by hand. A reminder on the note does become a task by itself.

Can I share a Google Tasks list like a Keep note?

No. Keep notes can be shared with anyone to edit together, but Google Tasks has no shared lists. With a work or school account you can assign single tasks to people in a Google Chat space or a Google Doc, and they land in that person's own list.

Where did my Google Keep reminders go?

Into Google Tasks. Each reminder with a date and time became a task, still shown on its Keep note. Location reminders were removed and their place copied into the task's description, and non-repeating reminders more than a year old went into a list called Old Google Keep Reminders.

Do Google Keep and Google Tasks have apps for Mac or Windows?

No. Both have phone apps, and on a computer you use them in a browser: keep.google.com, and tasks.google.com or the side panel in Gmail and Calendar. Keep's Chrome app was retired in early 2021.
