Clean up duplicate Google Tasks

Google Tasks doesn't find duplicates for you. You can go through each list and delete copies by hand, or ask an AI assistant connected through an MCP server to find likely duplicates, show what it would delete, and delete them once you approve.

By hand

  1. Open a list in Google Tasks, on the web at tasks.google.com or in the app on your phone.
  2. Go through it for tasks that say the same thing.
  3. Delete the extra copies, keeping the one with notes, subtasks or a due date.

Good for: one list with a handful of copies. The catch: it’s one list at a time, and copies with slightly different titles are easy to miss.

With an AI assistant

Connect Google Tasks to an AI app such as Claude or ChatGPT through an MCP server, then ask: “Find the duplicates in my lists and clear them out.” A good connection:

Sidekick for AI (coming soon) works this way. Its free plan covers two lists and one bulk delete of up to 50 tasks a day; Premium removes the daily counts and allows up to 200 tasks in one delete. See removing duplicates with Sidekick for AI.

Good for: many lists, or copies with slightly different titles. The catch: you need an AI app that supports MCP connectors.

Questions

Why do I have duplicate tasks in Google Tasks?

Usually from adding the same thing twice in different places, such as from Gmail and from your phone, or from an app or import that ran more than once.

Can I undo deleting a task in Google Tasks?

Only straight away, with the undo that appears right after you delete. Google Tasks has no bin, so check before you delete in bulk.

Can an AI delete the wrong tasks?

It can if it acts without asking. Use a connection that previews exactly what it would delete and waits for your approval.
